About
CATHERINE BARNES ...
I have over thirty years of experience with historical autographs, initially as a scholarly researcher (I have a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University) and then, beginning in 1981, as a dealer. In 1985, I established my own business, devoted exclusively to autographs and manuscripts, and over the years, my firm has developed a reputation for its integrity, the quality of its offerings, and its scholarly expertise. I strive to offer interesting historical material that is carefully authenticated, accurately described, and fairly priced.
My inventory emphasizes American history, from the colonial period through the 20th century, but also includes European and other non-U.S. autographs. I define "historical" autographs quite broadly to include not only Presidents, royalty, and other government leaders, but also scientists and inventors, financiers and industrialists, military leaders, religious figures, reformers, explorers, aviators, and notable individuals in the arts. I enjoy working with customers, helping them build collections that match their interests and tastes and offering guidance on all aspects of autograph collecting.
I issue printed catalogues, containing a selection of items from my inventory, on an irregular basis (usually twice a year). A sample catalogue will be sent to anyone upon request. In between catalogues, I offer many autographs directly to customers who have informed me of their wants, and so I invite collectors to advise me of their current areas of interest.
I am always pleased to buy historical autographs, from single items to entire collections, and to sell items on consignment, when appropriate. I welcome inquiries about any autographs that you may be considering selling. (Please note that I do not buy or sell sports, movie star, or current celebrity autographs.)
I served as the president of PADA from 1999-2002. Prior to that, I was treasurer of the association and on the board of directors. I have also served on the board of trustees of the Manuscript Society and am a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America.
